Achievement and Honors
Marre co-founded the Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1948 – one of the earliest classical repertory companies in America – which saw many productions go on to New York City Center Drama Company under Lincoln Kirstein’s guidance. Later that same year he was hired to direct it again! At its inaugural theatrical season, he directed productions of Love’s Labour Lost, The Merchant of Venice and Shaw’s Misalliance. In 1954 he won a Donaldson Award (an early precursor of Tonys) for Best Director of a Musical for Kismet on Broadway; at Ahmanson Theatre/Los Angeles Music Center he also directed several plays and musicals; among these was Jean Anouilh’s play Time Remembered which featured Helen Hayes; before marrying actress Joan Diener in 1956.
Personal Life
Marre is the former husband of actress Jan Farrand. They share two children and three grandchildren together. Additionally, he is longtime friends with playwright-lyricist Mimi Turque and her family as well as having directed over 25 Broadway productions himself.
Marre has also donated his time and money to charitable causes outside of his work. He is particularly fond of supporting Galapagos Islands conservation efforts while at Sense he has assisted with their direct marketing appeal.
