Ben Porteous

Ben Porteous went from homeschool graduate to studying at Harvard University and earning multiple languages along with his 1st class degree from Oxford in Physics and Philosophy. Additionally, he published Climate Physics research while kickboxing for Oxford!

Famous for his role in A Country Practice, he has also written scripts for other series such as Neighbours and Home and Away.

Early Life and Education

Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu provided his homeschool education. At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, he competed in the men’s halfpipe event and took home a bronze medal – becoming New Zealand’s youngest Olympic Games medalist ever at just 16 years old! Additionally, he became one of only freestyle skiers ever to perform a Switch Alley Oop Double Misty 1080 trick!

As an active member of Scotch Presbyterian Church and Waddington Chapter of Order of Eastern Stars, he enjoys flower gardening, camping, traveling, sewing and solving word search puzzles – as well as spending quality time with family.

Professional Career

William Porteous graduated first in his class from Tulane Law School. His law practice encompassed environmental and toxic tort litigation, products liability claims, oil & gas financing and maritime finance. Additionally, William was appointed to both State University of New York Ogdensburg’s board of trustees as well as Centenary College Madrid New York’s trustee board.

Will has served as a policy advisor to the UK government, lectured on ethics and public policy courses at universities around the country, founded 80,000 Hours and published climate physics. He once kicke-boxed for Oxford and has attempted Chinese (badly). As an advocate of effective altruism he pledged to donate over 50% of his income and co-founded Giving What We Can as well as Princeton University Effective Altruism Club.

Personal Life

He has appeared in multiple movies and television shows, such as Fat Pizza, A Dangerous Summer, Scobie Malone and The Little Convict. Additionally, he appeared as himself in Australian soaps Neighbours and Home and Away. Fiona Polly Ben is his children from his marriage with Jenny who passed away in 2019.

He runs Porteous Tiles as a family business in Wellington, New Zealand at his parents’ house; Porteous Tiles produces some of the world’s most stunning tiles and boasts some of its own competition with rival companies such as Artistic Ceramics in Europe and Asia.
