Safai’s campaign finance filings reveal that nearly half of his funds come from real estate investments, particularly SST Investments – an operator of several high-end apartment complexes in San Francisco. He’s also served as political director for SEIU Local 87 and runs a consulting firm which provided services for one of Mayor Ed Lee’s main consultants.
Safai’s experience working as a real estate professional could prove advantageous in his bid to become the next mayor, although his ties with developers and landlords could present potential conflicts of interest should he become mayor.

In 2011, he played an integral part of the 2011 Hollywood poker scandal involving Tobey Maguire, Leonardo DiCaprio and Ben Affleck; it involved allegations that he owed nearly one million dollars before agreeing to settle for less than half the amount before being sued.
