Early Life and Education
Following his one-season professional football stint with the Philadelphia Eagles, Madden returned to California Polytechnic State in Santa Maria as a physical education teacher and assistant coach before being promoted as head coach in 1960 and leading their Bulldogs for two seasons before moving on to San Diego State University with an 11-6 record as head coach.
After his retirement from coaching, Madden found great success as an NFL color commentator on CBS, Fox and ABC broadcasts and earned 16 Sports Emmy Awards. In 2016, he led the Corning Hawks to their inaugural sectional championship and state playoff berth. Additionally, he earned all-state, league, and conference honors for both football and baseball.
After retiring as coach, Madden became a color commentator for NFL games on CBS, Fox, and NBC for over 30 years – famed for his analysis and commentary of each matchup.

Personal Life
Daniel was an enthusiastic sports fan and coach of his children’s youth basketball teams. He enjoyed rock music, especially Led Zeppelin. A master chef, Daniel made many delicious meals for family and friends. Daniel was an attentive husband and father who always looked for ways to enrich his children’s lives.
He was also an exceptional storyteller with an extraordinary ability to inject humor and grace into nearly any situation. He leaves behind his loving daughter Astoria (Story); 19 nieces and nephews; Bailey the beloved dog he so devotedly cared for, along with many dear friends and extended family members whom he will deeply miss.
