Early Life and Education
Pienta was one of the founding members of Barnyard Calamity Players comedy and acting troupe, playing harmonica and singing with Whittlin’ Walt & His Bladed Bluesmen blues band he belonged to with his family.
Pienta takes over for Hall-of-Famer coaches Santos and Byrne as Director of Men’s Cross Country and Track & Field Programs with the Maroon & Gold. In his 12th season with them and fifth as Director overall.
He provided guidance for NCAA All-Americans Leonard Korir, Mitch Goose, Dan Clorley, Kate Avery and Egle Morenaite during his time at Iona; during which they won 30 consecutive men’s cross country MAAC titles as well as 15 women’s championships; furthermore he helped set new indoor/outdoor 5,000-meter records for Korir and Goose.
Professional Career
Dan Pienta has dedicated much of his professional career to finding ways to increase efficiency and productivity, earning multiple US patents while attending Harvard Executive Education courses as well as the UC Berkeley Presidents Course regularly in order to hone his craft.
Pienta’s death triggered greater concern over school safety in Santa Rosa, with two massive student demonstrations held this week to press for enhanced campus security measures. A 15-year-old named Daniel Jesus Pulido was charged on Monday with voluntary manslaughter and weapons offenses related to Pienta’s stabbing incident.

Achievement and Honors
Pienta is also active in the arts. He has painted for several years and had his works displayed at several galleries; additionally, two books of his have been written by Pienta himself and in 2012 was honored with Sarasota City’s Creative Artist Award.
He is survived by his wife, Karen Pienta (Rector), their children Sharon Emery, David Pienta Jr., Ronald Pienta of Atlanta Georgia (with Christina Bacon as his partner), Michael Pienta as well as seventeen grandchildren; Walter and Veronica Pienta had previously passed.
Richard Pienta is also the brother of Patricia Czarnopys and Richard Pienta.
Personal Life
Pienta was an adoring mother, wife, and grandmother who cared deeply about her family and considered their accomplishments her most meaningful legacy. She was always delightful company whose warm smile could light up any room.
Pienta joined Iona College men’s and women’s cross country coaching staffs as an assistant coach in 2004 before being elevated to director in 2021, succeeding Hall-of-Famer coaches Joe Santos and John Byrne (both Hall-of-Famers). Since then, he has led both programs to MAAC Championships; developing some of the region’s finest runners such as Egle Morenaite (three time MAAC champion, USTFCCCA All-American).
He was well known for his love of music and comedy, having joined the Barnyard Calamity Players comedy troupe as an acting member. His passing has caused great sadness to many friends and relatives of his.
