Daniel Darden, 22, Was Shot and Killed Jan. 15 at an Apartment Complex in Florence, Florida
FLORENCE, Ky. — A man from northern Kentucky was given 50 years in prison after killing another at an apartment complex in Florence on Jan. 15. Police believe Robert Pence, 18, shot Daniel Darden, 22, before fleeing to Florida before being apprehended by Pinellas County Sheriff’s deputies and arrested there.
Early Life and Education
Daniel moved to Frederick, Oklahoma when he was 13, attending Boyd High School where he played football, basketball and ran track – being part of their state championship winning football team in 1956!
He previously worked on several political campaigns in Missouri before joining the Biden-Harris administration. Furthermore, he is an avid traveler having visited five continents worldwide.
At Darden’s sentencing hearing, the district court carefully considered all relevant factors under SS 3553(a). These included his nature and circumstances of offense conduct, his history and characteristics, pattern of criminal activity, possession of firearms and marijuana by Darden as well as any reference to family background that might make his sentence seem unfair or unreasonable. Ultimately, their sentence was both procedurally sound and not substantively unreasonable.

Colgate Whitehead Darden Jr. was an attorney and Democratic politician associated with the Byrd Organization who served as U.S. Representative from Virginia from 1933 to 1937, having been elected in an at-large election following Congress’s switch from district-based elections.
Achievement and Honors
Darden is the author of several books, such as People Get Ready: A New History of Black Gospel Music. In addition, he serves as director for Baylor University’s Black Gospel Music Restoration Project which seeks out and preserves rare LPs, 78s and 45s from all around the globe.
At Darden’s trial, Sgt. Vandergiessen provided testimony that he observed certain drug transactions. The defense was limited to asking general questions and the court disallowed cross-examination concerning Vandergiessen’s surveillance post location.

Daniel Darden was an active member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and worked as a nuclear supervisor/trainer with Norfolk Naval Shipyard, receiving multiple awards for his service as an United States Marine veteran. He leaves behind his wife Cathy and sons Charles and Christopher who continue his legacy.
Darden was in the vicinity of an incident reported to police, yet prosecutors believe his shooting death to be unrelated to it. Robert Pence was later apprehended by the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Tactical Apprehension and Surveillance Unit in St. Petersburg, Florida for murder.
Pence was sentenced to 50 years for the fatal shooting of 22-year-old Daniel Darden at Walnut Creek Apartments in Florence on Jan. 15, 2021. Darden was found with gunshot wounds in his parking lot before he was transported to St Elizabeth Hospital where he ultimately succumbed shortly after arriving there.

Furthermore, they made a pledge of over $100k towards supporting its new arboretum and botanical gardens.
