Dave Martens was an esteemed sports coach and professor at Southern Connecticut State University. His guidance and mentoring of thousands of students in Branford, CT were life-altering experiences for him.

Early Life and Education
David Martens was raised in West Haven and attended West Haven Public Schools. He achieved great success on the track team and set numerous school records in pole vaulting.
He graduated from Southern Connecticut State University with a Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education, as well as a Master of Science in Physical Education. At the University of Connecticut, he pursued further study to earn his Ph.D. in Sport Biomechanics.
Dave was an inspirational educator at Southern and in the Branford community for over two decades, providing his students with academic excellence, athletic success, life skills development and personal guidance.
Professional Career
Dave Martens enjoyed a long and illustrious career at Southern, teaching hundreds of students in various classroom settings. Additionally, he co-founded the Marine Studies Institute.
He was an experienced instructor of SCUBA and a certified Water Safety Instructor. He provided underwater scuba courses to high school and college students as well as numerous recreational and competitive swimmers.
He has also been a guest speaker at Branford schools, providing lectures and demonstrations on kinesiology and SCUBA. Additionally, he helped lead the adventure climbing program at Walsh Intermediate School and assisted at field days. His kindness, wit, and gentle nature made him an invaluable community member.

He had been teaching courses in Physical Education and Kinesiology for over two decades, serving as assistant coach of the school’s swim team which won several New England championships. Furthermore, he was a certified SCUBA instructor.
He teaches in the Department of Exercise Science and serves on the faculty’s Promotion and Tenure Committee. Additionally, he has served on numerous professional organizations. David Martens lived his life to the fullest, taking pleasure in all that God had created. Throughout his journey, his greatest desire was that others would come to know Jesus and accept Him into their hearts.
He provided students with academic and athletic development, life skills, and personal guidance. His knowledge of kinesiology and scuba diving made him a valuable asset to Southern Connecticut State University, Branford High School, and Walsh Intermediate Schools.
He was an integral member of his community, volunteering with the Optimist Club and lending his boat to students participating in project adventure program or other school events. Furthermore, he supported Branford Police Department by helping with search and rescue operations.
