Early Life and Education
David Baruch Simpson was born on October 12th, 1938 in New York City to Selma (Randell) and Leonard Simpson. He attended Hunter Elementary School and Music and Art High School before earning his Phi Beta Kappa from Cornell University.
After graduating from Cornell, he attended law school at Columbia and then practiced commercial and residential real estate law for over 50 years in New York and New Jersey.
In 2014, he was appointed provost and executive vice president of George Mason University, leading it to Carnegie Research-one (R1) status – making him the largest public research university in Virginia at that time.
Wu has also served as dean and Iacocca Professor of engineering at Lehigh University’s Rossin College of Engineering, as well as a visiting professor at the University of Pennsylvania. With this extensive leadership background, Wu brings an impressive amount of insight to his role as president of Baruch College where he strives to foster an encouraging atmosphere that welcomes students from all backgrounds.
Professional Career
David Baruch is the new president of Baruch College, responsible for leading an esteemed institution with more than 18,000 students across three campuses. Established in 1847 as the Free Academy, Baruch has long been known for its unique educational model that offers a superior higher education to learners from all backgrounds and social classes.
At the top of his priority list is creating a major that educates students about race, gender and business. Working alongside faculty from all three of the College’s schools, this major will be groundbreaking for both students and their larger community.

Baruch College President David Wu has been honored with several distinctions, including being included on the inaugural “Power of Diversity: Asian 100” list and City & State’s 2020 Higher Education Power 50. Additionally, College Cliffs named him one of “50 Top U.S. College and University Presidents.”
From 2014-2020, Dr. Christopher E. Wilson served as Provost of George Mason University, leading it to unprecedented growth in academic programs, multi-disciplinary collaboration, student diversity and academic outcomes. Under his direction Mason became the youngest institution ever awarded Carnegie Research One (R1) designation.
He has brought this impressive record of visionary higher education leadership with him to Baruch College as it develops new and responsive models for teaching, research, student services and campus safety in light of the Covid-19 pandemic. Drawing upon lessons learned from this crisis and Baruch’s signature creativity, he hopes to usher in a paradigm shift in public higher education.
