On her voyage to Philadelphia, it was discovered that the ship had transported on board goods not sent from the Company’s accounts. This caused major disruption in sales for the business.

On December 21, 1968, President Nixon awarded him with the Distinguished Flying Cross for his heroic actions during aerial flight as aircraft commander of a Coast Guard helicopter engaged in saving four men and a 10-year-old boy from a fishing vessel that had gone aground and was breaking up in rough seas off Marmot Island, Alaska.

He served the Corps of Engineers as navigator for three Mississippi River Challenge speedboat races from New Orleans to St. Louis that were led by Mike Reagan (son of former President Ronald Reagan) and actor Don Johnson.
