M*A*S*H’s 1974 season two episode “George,” set against the backdrop of jingoism, provides an important milestone for gay characters. This tale follows a wounded soldier as he comes out to his unit after being injured, and it does so with an ethos that is at once sympathetic and inclusive – perfecting M*A*S*H’s compassionate ethos.
Early Life and Education
Washington was raised on his father’s plantation in Ferry Farm, Virginia – located along the Rappahannock River near Fredericksburg. As the oldest of four children, Washington’s responsibility to manage the property served to instil in him an appreciation of hard work and responsibility.
He was an inquisitive learner, and his aptitude for chemistry inspired him to pursue a career in the field. After earning a bachelor’s degree from Williams College and PhD from the University of Colorado, his research covered various topics such as synthetic carbon compounds and polymers for biological, physical, and chemical processes. Furthermore, he published numerous scientific papers. However, perhaps most notably was his establishment of the first university-based chemical laboratory in America at his alma mater – an incredible accomplishment!
Professional Career
He was a professional actor best known for his role as Dr. Joe on the hit TV show M*A*S*H. A cast member on the series for 11 seasons, his performance earned critical acclaim and accolades alike.
He wrote several songs for the show that are still performed today. As a well-respected actor, his career spanned decades.
He was raised in New York City and began acting at the Hb studio there. He appeared in several films and TV shows, as well as being a popular voice actor for Disney. In 1976 he was nominated for Primetime respect and died three years later (2012); survived by his wife. A great actor who will be missed by his fans forevermore.

As a teenager, George lived in Islington, London with his three sisters and an affinity for playing football.
He was a regular in the first team, scoring three goals during the FA Cup. Additionally, he was captained once by England for their national team.
He spent his career playing for Arsenal and Derby County, with the latter signing him in 1975 and becoming an important member of their team that year.
