Georgia Senator
Georgia Senator Raphael Warnock
Senator Raphael Warnock of Georgia is in a historic runoff campaign with Republican Herschel Walker for the seat of senator from his state. If successful, Warnock will become the first Black senator from Georgia.
Democrats have the opportunity to expand their majority in the Senate and increase their influence over judges and legislation. However, they must contend with a resurgence of white reactionary support in this race, which could hinder their success.
Early Life and Education
In these times of civil rights and political struggle, Warnock stands as a beacon for social-justice faith and politics from the Black church tradition. A formidable preacher, he has become an influential voice on voting rights and democracy issues.
He was raised in the Kayton Homes housing projects of Savannah, Georgia where his parents both worked as Pentecostal pastors. Though they were passionate Evangelicals, they respected their children’s right to form their own opinions.
Ten years after graduating from Morehouse College, he continued his education at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. Afterwards, he served as assistant pastor at Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem before being named senior pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta.
Professional Career
As pastor of Atlanta’s Ebenezer Baptist Church, he has used his platform to promote social justice. The iconic red brick church has a rich history in Black theology and activism, having served as home to the Southern Christian Leadership Conference during the civil rights era.
Warnock has been a lifelong student of King’s teachings, earning the endorsements of both the legendary civil rights leader and others such as former Presidents Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama. He has championed criminal justice reform measures and Medicaid expansion to benefit more people in need.
He has also campaigned for lower student loan debt and insulin cost caps, criticizing the Supreme Court for overturning Roe v Wade (1973) which legalized abortion, and supporting Black Lives Matter movement. This race has become a national spectacle with millions of dollars pouring into it.
Achievements and Honors
The Earl of Warwick was a highly successful military leader and politician who exerted his power across England, winning him both admirers and detractors alike.
He was a prominent figure in fifteenth century England and an important player in the War of the Roses. Known as “Kingmaker” due to his influence over monarchy, society, and politics during that era, he earned himself a place of honor among England’s nobles.
He was an accomplished and prolific writer, producing numerous historical novels and short stories such as Uther and Igraine, Bertrand of Brittany and The Red Scout.
Personal Life
Warnock was raised in Kayton Homes public housing as the 11th of 12 children in a blended family. He was instilled with hard work, faith and love by his brothers and sisters; that no matter what life brought his way they would always have his back.
Warnock graduated from Morehouse College in 1991 and went on to earn a master’s degree at Union Theological Seminary, where he found mentorship from James Cone – the pioneer of Black liberation theology.
At Union, Warnock began work on a dissertation which never was finished. It argued that Black theology had become too dependent upon church conversation partners and needed to be led by pastors who are physically present in their churches and who genuinely care about seeing their congregations thrive.
Net Worth
Warnock first captured national attention when he ran for Senate in 2020. On January 5, 2021, he easily defeated Kelly Loeffler by a wide margin and is now the junior United States senator from Georgia.
By 2022, his net worth is estimated to be approximately $800 thousand. He has a retirement account with MMBB and several other investments ranging in value from $1000 to $15,000.
Warnock’s salary since taking office has more than doubled. In 2021, he earned $164,816 for his Senate salary and an advance of $243,750 from the sale of his 2022 book A Way Out of No Way.
Warnock has achieved great success, yet his bitter divorce from Ndoye, his former pastor and wife, has left the family financially struggling. Ndoye claims Warnock isn’t covering childcare expenses and rarely gives her notice when he leaves town during visitation days.
