Henry Geil
Henry Geil, Iowa Hawkeyes Running Back
Henry Geil was up against an uphill battle at Iowa this season due to Toren Young and Ivory Kelly-Martin dominating his position. But the Wisconsin native didn’t back away from it – instead, he dug in.
He reached out to members of the coaching staff at Green Bay Preble to show his commitment and Tim Larsen, his coach there, was particularly taken by his character.
Early Life and Education
Henry Geil was an Iowa Hawkeyes running back. A three-star recruit by Rivals, Scout and 247 Sports, Geil was an aggressive runner who amassed more than 1,300 yards at Green Bay Preble High School last season – leading his league with 14.4 punt returns per return average.
He had multiple Division 1 offers from Michigan State, Indiana, Iowa, Syracuse South Dakota State and Western Michigan; ultimately choosing Iowa under head coach Kirk Ferentz as his school of choice.
Geil was an integral member of Iowa’s power run game; however, due to an injury he fell off of their depth chart and entered the transfer portal this spring. Geil intends to find programs who offer him more playing time.
Professional Career
Henry Geil was a three-star running back at Preble High School in Green Bay who held several scholarship offers from schools like Iowa. After visiting them during spring practice and playing against Ashwaubenon he made his decision and committed.
As a freshman, Geil saw fourth-quarter action as an Iowa freshman rushing 15 times for 37 yards – but quickly found himself eclipsed by Iowa’s other running backs like junior college transfer Mekhi Sargent and freshmen Toren Young and Ivory Kelly-Martin.
Geil decided to depart Iowa despite receiving eight offers from Division 1 schools such as Michigan State, Indiana, Syracuse, South Dakota State and Western Michigan. Unfortunately for Geil, his departure may come at an inopportune moment as most rosters are now full at this point in the season, making it hard for him to find immediate playing time elsewhere.
Achievement and Honors
Geil has never been one to put himself on a pedestal, yet is not shy about putting himself out there. His passion for magic borders on reckless, and he pursues grandiose ambitions without hesitation.
His potential has been recognized, as has his work ethic with various accolades such as being selected to participate in the 2020 Carson Scholars program and earning two Academic All-American accolades.
Preble’s football program relied heavily on Geil to lead them. Last season he rushed for almost 700 yards and was an integral part of their 24-16 win against Ashwaubenon in their season opener. Geil ultimately decided on Iowa University after receiving offers from eight other Division 1 schools.
Personal Life
Geil is extremely curious and intelligent, though his enthusiasm for magic sometimes verges on reckless. Additionally, he’s highly perceptive and adept at reading people according to his desires.
He was an outstanding runner for Preble and formed a powerful duo with senior Darionne Hughes last season, totaling 784 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns.
Iowa was his choice, beating Iowa State and Indiana out. Even Stitz gave the running back a pen as an “extra gift”.
He quickly earned a place as one of the premier duelists, becoming Vice President of Hogwarts Dueling Club upon its formation during his third year. Naturally aggressive and abrasive during duels, his presence often ensured an edged victory.

Green Bay Preble senior running back Henry Geil is an indispensable piece for a team with high hopes of competing for a Fox River Classic Conference championship.
