The late John Cowart, 86, passed away Saturday, December 7, 2018. He died of lung disease, at his home in Dover, North Carolina. His funeral will be held at Mt. Paran Church of God on Monday, December 10th.

Cowart began his real estate career in Atlanta, Georgia. During his career, he created several residential and commercial projects. He also helped establish the John Cowart Scholarship Fund at Georgia State University. This fund provided financial assistance for students from around the world.

In addition to his real estate work, Cowart also had a long and successful career as a social worker. Among his many civic accomplishments, he helped veterans of the Spanish-American war and World War II. He also arranged trips for PTSD veterans to national war museums in Washington D.C. and Asheville, North Carolina.

He founded his company, John Cowart Properties, in 1972. He developed thirteen projects and created over 2,500 single family homes in Sandy Springs and North Fulton County. He was also an active member of several industry related organizations.

He also served as a member of the Atlanta Area Council of Boy Scouts of America. After serving honorably in the United States Army, he returned to Atlanta, Georgia and continued his career. In 1983, he formed Cowart Reynolds Associates. Later that year, he relocated his family to a wooded parcel of land in Dunwoody, Georgia.

During his tenure in the real estate business, John Cowart also was a leading force in the creation of commercial projects in Metro Atlanta. Among his most notable contributions were the development of Wynterhall and Redfield communities, both in Sandy Springs.
