John Cupparo – Board Member of Southwest Power Pool of Little Rock
John Cupparo is an executive with extensive expertise in the electric utility industry, from finance to regional planning and competitive transmission solutions. Recently appointed board member of Southwest Power Pool of Little Rock, his membership elected him into three-year terms that will continue his leadership role within the organization.
Recently, utilities have been facing an uphill battle to maintain the balance of their transmission systems, which was easier in days gone by when each balancing area would automatically balance load and generation entering each hour. But that has changed as more renewable resources have entered into circulation – leading to deviations within any given hour.
John Cupparo has extensive experience in the energy sector, holding various leadership roles such as finance, regional planning and competitive transmission solutions. Most recently, he served as Senior Executive of Berkshire Hathaway Energy.
His professional life has seen him work on numerous projects, such as the Energy Gateway that will link Western United States to Asia and Europe. Additionally, he leads Berkshire Hathaway Energy’s Grid Resilience Office which coordinates their businesses to assess emerging risks and enhance response and mitigation capabilities. On top of all that, he currently sits on the board of directors for Southwest Power Pool (SPP), elected Cupparo and Ben Trowbridge to their independent boards on January 25. Both will guide SPP through transition into more competitive transmission markets around the country.

John Cupparo is an influential leader in the electric utility industry with expertise in finance, regional planning and competitive transmission services. He was recently elected to serve on the independent board of directors for Southwest Power Pool (SPP), a regional grid operator that guarantees access to reliable and affordable electricity. SPP’s membership voted to elect Cupparo and Ben Trowbridge to three-year terms beginning January 2022.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in computer information systems from Colorado State University and has also served on the Junior Achievement board for Oregon and SW Washington, advocating economic empowerment through education for young people. For his efforts, he has received multiple awards including the President’s Distinguished Service Award. In his free time he enjoys skiing, traveling, and volunteering within his community.
John Cupparo is an accomplished business executive who has spearheaded numerous transmission projects throughout his career. At Berkshire Hathaway Energy, he served on the Western Electricity Coordinating Council and Northern Tier Transmission Group – a regional planning entity covering multiple western states – as well as heading up their Grid Resilience Office that coordinated all efforts related to assessing emerging risks to the energy grid.
Prior to joining PacifiCorp, Cupparo was a senior executive at Texaco and Koch Industries, responsible for their natural gas, power and pipeline businesses. He also worked in technology at PacifiCorp where he managed information management systems across both regulated and unregulated operations. Cupparo holds a bachelor’s degree in computer information systems from Colorado State University.
