Born in Sheffield, john douthwaite lost his mother and two brothers when he was young. His family went through a lot of upheaval and his education was not the best.

He was later converted to Christianity and served as a medical missionary in China. He was able to gain a full medical qualification while serving in the country.

During the Sino-Japanese War of 1894 – 1895, Douthwaite was instrumental in establishing a hospital in Chefoo and helped to train the first Chinese medical students.

Personal Life

Dr Douthwaite was a medical missionary who served in Chefoo, China. He was born in 1848 in Sheffield, England.

After an unhappy childhood and a misspent youth, Douthwaite was converted to Christianity. He became a doctor and served in China as a medical missionary, where he evangelized and taught the Chinese to heal themselves.

He joined the army on 18 July 1940 as a Home Defence Bn and volunteered for airborne forces in November 1943, after which he was posted to 16 Platoon, D Company, The 5th (Scottish) Parachute Battalion (5th Para Bn). Sgt Douthwaite was sent to North Africa in June 1945 for R&R before being posted to Palestine in October 1945, where he remained until July 1946. Upon returning home, Sgt Douthwaite married Lily Knight on 14 August 1946.
