At Simon Fraser University, he had 53 receptions for 861 yards and 10 touchdowns during his collegiate career. Additionally, his special teams play earned him the title of team’s Offensive Player of the Year.

Early Life and Education

John was an outstanding student and athlete, particularly in football and wrestling. Additionally, he made it a priority to read books that taught him about self-improvement.

He was raised by a hardworking family that valued education for its children. His parents always encouraged him to read regularly, and they were always ready and willing to offer emotional support, motivation, and drive when necessary.

When John decided to attend college, he put all his effort into his studies. He enrolled at Ohio Christian University – his father’s alma mater – and worked hard on his grades so he could receive scholarships.

John was a mechanical engineer with Russell, Burdsall and Ward. Afterward, he earned his Master of Science in Engineering from Princeton and an MBA from Harvard.

He served in the military, earning him a Bronze Star for Valor and Navy Commendation Medal.

After graduation, he served in Vietnam as a rifle platoon and company commander. Subsequently, he attended Tufts University’s Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy before entering the Foreign Service until retirement.

In retirement, he and his wife Karen enjoyed sailing together. Living in Denmark (Karen’s native country), they spent their free time on the water together.

Achievements and Honors

John was an outstanding military officer, earning him the Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Commendation Medal and National Defense Service Medal.

After his retirement, he returned to his hometown of Cedar Falls, Iowa where he has dedicated his life to serving both the community and youth athletics.

He founded the Martin Bros Select AAU basketball team and served as a volunteer assistant coach for Cedar Falls High School’s boys’ basketball team.

His family and friends have kept his memory alive through a scholarship endowment. He lived his life with great passion for helping others, and was truly an exemplary gentleman.

Personal Life

John was a devoted family man who always made time for his wife Marlynn and their children. His strong work ethic proved to be his biggest strength, as did his dedication to his job.

When not working, he enjoyed hunting wildlife and taking his boat out on Norfolk Lake. Additionally, he loved playing his fiddle and hosting music parties with friends and family.

He was an avid sports enthusiast, particularly football and basketball. He was involved in multiple teams and served on the board of directors for Waterloo Jaycees.
