His father was a machinist and his mother an at-home mother. He attended Lake Worth High School before going on to earn a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Texas.

He settled in the area and pursued a career as a lawyer, eventually being admitted to the bar in 1994.

After spending ten years in Orange County, Kinchen returned to Halifax and opened a law office there. He also developed mercantile interests. In 1779 he was elected to the state senate where he took an anti-slavery stance by sponsoring bills for both an academy and reparations for slave owners.
