John Knowlton was a loving husband, father and grandfather who loved his family. He is survived by his wife, Pamela; son, Wyatt of Homer; step-daughter, Hannah Wilson of Watertown; sisters, Laurie Hathaway of Cortland, Nancy Knowlton of Cortland and Jacklyn Havington (Howard) of Dryden; and numerous nieces and nephews.
John was also an active and well-respected member of his community. He served as a volunteer in the local militia, and became captain of the Ashford Company in 1775. This was the first unit from an outside colony to march to Massachusetts to assist with the struggle after the Lexington and Concord incidents. He was later elected selectman of Ashford, Connecticut. During this time he helped reorganize the town’s volunteers into the 5th Company of the Connecticut regiment under General Israel Putnam.
