John Kuppens

John Kuppens is an attorney based in Columbia, South Carolina. He is a member of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP.

Early Life and Education

Born in Rice Lake, Wisconsin, john kuppens is the son of Walter C. and Mary C. (Goris) Kuppens, who emigrated from Holland in 1922.

His scholarly achievements, practical and theoretical, have profoundly influenced the development of atmospheric science. He was an early pioneer in weather telegraphy and storm warning systems, and developed extensive knowledge of oceanic weather.

As a young man, Koppen lived on the family estate at Karabakh in Crimea. The complex geography of the Crimean peninsula enticed him to apply his intellectual and scientific abilities to its varied environment.

Professional Career

Kuppens is a litigation partner in Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP’s Columbia, South Carolina office. He has over 30 years of experience representing manufacturers and retailers in a variety of industries including the automotive, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, construction, and energy sectors. He is also a member of the American Bar Association and the Defense Research Institute.

Despite the recession he is still in the practice of his craft and has recently launched a new product aimed at the legal services industry called iDentity, which offers an online platform to deliver digital insurance documents that are compliant with regulatory requirements. It is also a service that offers a digital document repository, digital forensics, and a mobile app that enables users to access their files on the go.

Among the many awards and accolades that have come his way, one of the most rewarding has been his role in fostering younger lawyers’ professional development. He is a past chair of DRI’s Young Lawyers Committee and has served on numerous committees and task forces within the 23,000-member organization. As a result, he has had the opportunity to learn from some of the industry’s finest.

Personal Life

John Kuppens is a lawyer who practices in the area of Product Liability and Class Action/Mass Torts. He has been listed in Super Lawyers since 2009 and is a member of the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys Association.

He has been recognized as one of the best lawyers in Columbia, SC and is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and a member of the International Association of Defense Counsel. He also serves on the Board of Directors for DRI – The Voice of the Defense Bar and is a past chair of its Young Lawyers Committee.

He is a highly regarded practitioner who has a strong reputation for his first-class commercial litigation, product liability and personal injury practice. He has a broad range of experience, including in the pharmaceutical, medical device and technology sectors.
