Early Life and Education

John Matzo credits his father, a scientist who helped to discover the diurnal variation in Earth’s magnetic field, with shaping his interest in geography and environmental issues. This discovery spurred on John to pursue these topics throughout his life.

He enjoyed building with his Meccano set as a child and also learned how to operate electrical devices such as buzzers and batteries. For an entire summer, he worked alongside an electrical work crew in North Carolina.

John Matzo’s parents, John and Mary (nee Pennock) Matzo, lived in Pine Brook section of Scranton, Pennsylvania. As immigrants from Hungary and Russia, the family spoke Hungarian, Russian, English, German and French fluently.

John is a veteran of stand-up comedy with an impressive resume that includes several notable performances. He was featured as an actor in Les Miserables on Broadway, hosted Family Feud on television, and made guest appearances on Saturday Night Live.

Streit’s is America’s sole family-owned national matzo manufacturer, founded in 1896 on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Now run by cousins Alan Adler and Aaron Gross, they strive to keep the business running but its outdated equipment needs replacing. Their new film “Matzo: A History” pays homage to both its longtime employees as well as those behind it today.
