John Romney – A Biography
John Romney was an English artist who lived and worked in London and Chester. He painted a variety of subjects including portraits and landscapes.
A respected and popular printmaker, he was an important figure in the art world. He exhibited at the Society of Arts and the Royal Academy.
Early Life and Education
John Romney was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. He received his bachelor’s degree in 1971 from Brigham Young University and earned a master’s degree in business administration in 1975.
He also earned his law degree, cum laude, from Harvard Law School. He founded Bain Capital in 1984.
His father, George Romney, was a successful business executive who managed American Motors from near bankruptcy to record profits. He later served as governor of Michigan (1963-69).
John Romney is undoubtedly one of the best known names in Massachusetts politics, but he was also an accomplished entrepreneur. In his day job, he was a co-founder and stoic CEO of Bain Capital, an investment firm that has successfully launched hundreds of companies in the past three decades. In his free time, he authored several books and helmed the most prestigious business school in America.
In addition to his aforementioned accomplishments, Romney rounded out his career as a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a member of the Salt Lake temple, and inducted into its hall of fame for his efforts to promote Mormonism in Utah. He and his wife of 53 years, Chere, enjoyed a lifetime of travel and family fun.
Achievements and Honors
Romney was a businessman who served as the governor of Massachusetts from 2003 to 2007. He also ran for president in 2008 and 2012.
As a senator, he remained committed to the state’s budget and made health care for all citizens a priority. He emphasized the need to invest in infrastructure and wildfire prevention and response capabilities.
He was also known for his support of the Navajo Utah Water Rights Settlement Act, which would provide running water to 40% of the Navajo Nation that hasn’t had access to it for decades.
In 2021, the JFK Library Foundation gave Romney the Profile in Courage Award for his courageous stand in the 2020 Presidential Impeachment trial. He was the first Senator to vote to convict a President of his own party.
