Coaching for Literacy began as a high school project when two graduates of Memphis, Jonathan Wilfong and Andrew Renshaw, saw the need for an educational program to assist children in learning how to read.

Early Life and Education

John Wilfong was born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee. He is the son of a former Memphis basketball player as well as the grandson of an AAU coach.

He was an outstanding student-athlete at Briarcrest Christian School and letter winner for the University of Memphis. Additionally, he earned an MBA from their School of Business and is an enthusiastic philanthropist.

Wilfong and Andrew Renshaw, now a pre-med student at Vanderbilt, founded Coaching for Literacy when they were seniors in high school. Their idea was to use their family ties to college basketball to raise funds for literacy programs across the country.

Wilfong has been a financial advisor for 15 years. With his Series 63 license, he can provide advice to clients throughout Tennessee and Texas.

He is currently an associate at B-29 Investments in Dallas and previously worked at an investment bank in Memphis.

His passion for literacy is evident when he joins students at Preston Hollow Elementary School to read their favorite books. It’s just one way he has dedicated his life to aiding others.

Wilfong and his high school friend Andrew Renshaw launched the literacy program Coaching for Literacy with him, and it quickly took off – both in terms of money raised and college basketball programs that joined forces and hosted a game during the 2016-17 season.

Achievements and Honors

The University of Memphis graduate is an alumnus of their business school and holds both a bachelor’s degree in economics and master of business administration. Furthermore, he’s part of the alumni council and has served on various committees throughout the years.

He is also actively engaged with several non-profits that benefit the Baltimore community, such as Living Classrooms – an educational charity dedicated to improving the lives of children from underserved neighborhoods.

Wilfong has earned not only success as a businessman, but he’s also a dedicated family man and sports enthusiast. He and his wife Catherine have three children; as an avid Memphis Tigers fan, he’s had season tickets for over 30 years. Most importantly, Wilfong always willing to step in as parent and support his kids as they pursue their college dreams.

He is a retired Air Force officer, having served in both WWII and Vietnam. Throughout his service in the air force, he piloted fighters, bombers and cargo aircraft while earning numerous military accolades. Survived by his loving wife Elaine of 61 years and their two daughters, he leaves behind many fond memories.
