Johnson City Honors Former Chief Justice John Exum

One of Johnson City’s most heavily traveled highways is named after former Chief Justice John Exum. On the eve of Johnson City’s 150th anniversary celebration, we pay tribute to this man who made an impact on Johnson City.

As a justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court, he helped usher in a new era of judicial boldness that expanded individual rights in North Carolina. This book explores that important period in the Court’s history.

Early Life and Education

john exum grew up in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. He graduated from Rocky Mount High School in 1943 and earned his degree from UNC at Chapel Hill.

After returning to Rocky Mount, he practiced law for over 50 years. He also served as a judge in the Nash County records court.

He was a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and the Sigma Nu Fraternity. He received his JD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

As a member of the Johnson City community, he became very popular with the citizens. He was honored by the naming of one of Johnson City’s most heavily traveled highways: the John Exum Parkway.

Professional Career

Exum’s professional career has been hampered by injuries, and it’s unclear how much playing time he’ll receive with the Cleveland Cavaliers. But he’ll still get to show off his physical skillset, and perhaps a move to Cleveland could be just the ticket for him to finally reach his full potential.
