Robert Loveless – New York Special

Loveless is known to be one of the most innovative knife makers in the industry. His contributions include the invention of the full tapered tang, which runs through the handle and blade of the knife. This method makes the knife more sturdy and stronger. Besides this, it also places the weight of the knife in the center.

Loveless started making knives from his own designs in the 1960s. He later became the lead designer of Gerber Knives. Loveless has also created knives for several other companies. For example, he made knives for Beretta, Schrade, and Lone Wolf Knives. In addition, he has been a member of the Knifemaker’s Guild, which was founded in 1970. As the Guild president, he was instrumental in introducing a number of innovations to the knife industry.

One of these innovations was the use of screw-type fasteners to secure handles. Other knifemakers had been using stamping to secure the handles, but Loveless believed that this would compromise the strength of the knife. By creating his own designs, he was able to make the knives much more durable.

Another innovation was the use of the Micarta knife handle material. Loveless forged his first blade from a 1937 Packard spring on an oil stove on board a ship in Newark, New Jersey. It was the size of a pocket comb.

Robert Waldorf Loveless, or RW Loveless, was born in Warren, Ohio. He studied sociology at the Armor Institute of Technology in Chicago and was a member of the Merchant Marine at the age of 14. He served as a tower operator on Iwo Jima, and later was a control tower operator on Guam. During this time, he witnessed many knife fights in foreign ports. After returning to the United States in 1953, he enrolled in the Knifemaker’s Guild.

The ‘Big Bear Classic’ fighting knife that Loveless designed is reproduced by Cold Steel. He was also inducted into the Blade magazine Cutlery Hall of Fame. Loveless was known to be one of the first makers of tactical knives, and his knives have been used by US special forces for a variety of purposes.

Throughout his career, he was involved in the production of thousands of knives for Abercrombie & Fitch. These knives were sold for $14 USD each. They were popular and a favorite among collectors. Known for their innovative design, Loveless’s knives had the ability to fit in a passport case.

Among Loveless’s other contributions was the invention of the “Delaware Maid” series. These knives had a reclining nudist image and were acid etched with the name and maker’s logo. Using this design, Loveless had the ability to produce thousands of handmade knives. Despite its small size, the Delaware Maid was a hit with buyers, and made up much of Abercrombie & Fitch’s handcrafted products.

Today, the Loveless brand has become one of the most well-known knifemakers in the business. Collectors and fans alike admire the quality and craftsmanship of their products, and Loveless has continued to innovate.
