Neshoba County Fair – A Cultural Instigator

For decades, the Neshoba County Fair has been a cultural institution in the state of Mississippi. Located eight miles southwest of the county seat of Philadelphia, the fair has a rich history, including political oratory, a triathlon, chariot races, and a myriad of carnival foods.

The Neshoba County Fair has been held annually since 1891. It has also been a major player in the state’s politics, as well. Governors like Anselm McLaurin and Tom Hurley have spoken at the fair, and in the past, presidential candidates such as Michael Dukakis and Jack Kemp have popped up at the fair.

Other notable aspects of the fair are its history, the chariot race, and the midway. Traditionally, the Neshoba County Fair is not held during harvest time, but it is held at a convenient time in the late summer. Although the fair is not particularly large, it draws thousands of people each year. Many of them travel in ox-drawn wagons.

In addition to the fair, there are plenty of other things to do in the area, such as visiting Caledonia Public Library to see their book talk. They will be holding one on August 29 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. You should also check out the Petting Barn, which allows you to pet and feed the animals.

Other fun attractions at the Neshoba County Fair include the midway, which is the largest of its kind in the state. This includes a corn maze, a carnival, and many games and activities. One of the more interesting features of the fair is its ability to draw crowds. Typically, the event attracts between 30,000 and 40,000 people. During last year’s event, 8,215 people were in attendance at the Grandstand. Another popular attraction at the fair is the Red Clay and Sand Mixer, which is a fun way to share the coast’s culinary and entertainment options with visitors from across the state.

While the Neshoba County Fair isn’t a huge festival, it is a must-attend event for anyone looking to experience the newest and most cutting-edge in local entertainment. Be sure to visit the fair this July. It’s sure to be the best of the year. Make it a point to see the Mississippi State University tailgate tent, which is sponsored by Renasant Bank.
