New Lothrop Football Wins State Championship

New Lothrop opened the 2022 football season with a victory over Jackson Lumen Christi. The Vikings were led by junior quarterback Jack Kulhanek, who threw for one touchdown and ran for another. Lumen Christi scored the first touchdown of the game three minutes and 34 seconds into the game. After that, New Lothrop dominated, finishing with a 41-7 victory. This is the team’s third straight state championship.

The Hornets averaged nearly 40 points per game in their four regular-season games prior to their championship game. In the first half at Ford Field, New Lothrop showed off its offensive muscles. Julius Garza, a senior, scored three times – through the air, on the ground, and on special teams. He finished with 11-for-15 passing for 222 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 17 yards and returned a kickoff for a touchdown.

In the second half, St. Francis had the better of the offensive and defensive statistics. New Lothrop had just three first downs, but St. Francis ran 30 more plays and had 14 more possessions of the ball than the Vikings. It was also the higher scoring team. With the game tied at halftime, St. Francis moved to 2-1.
