Peter Pepper – He Picked a Pepper

It was a good year for a pepper named Peter Pepper, a name which was eventually changed to Piper. In his heyday, he had the best of both worlds, growing the finest of spicies on commercial spice plantations in the Caribbean and importing them into the British Isles. As a bonus, he also managed to impress the likes of Thomas Jefferson by introducing the first batch of Vietnamese mountain rice into the fold. A hefty price to pay for the privilege, but worth every penny in the end.

Despite being a tad over a century old, the Peter Pepper saga is still going strong. In the aforementioned heyday, the Spice Islands were controlled by the Dutch, with the Brits shipping the goods around the globe. By the late 1700s, the British had begun to realise that the spices were worth their weight in gold.
