Sam married Patricia Oates in 1954 and divorced her three years later in 1962. Following that he married Billie Kay Butler in 1963 until their divorces occurred in 1980 and 1984 respectively. Later he married Janice C Smith for twenty-one years until their final separation in 2014. Sam currently resides with Sandra Martorelli Donaldson in Albuquerque New Mexico with their four children Samuel III, Thomas, Jeniffer and Robert Donaldson whom he and Sandra Martorelli Donaldson purchased a home together back in December 2014 while Jan Smith provided one more child from that marriage which ended in 2014.

Sam Donaldson began his journalism career with ABC News as a Washington correspondent in October 1967. Since then, he covered many significant events, such as Vietnam, Watergate hearings and presidential campaigns for ABC. Along the way, he earned multiple Emmy awards and three Peabodys. He won both the Edward R. Murrow Award and Paul White Award. Additionally, he is a cancer survivor and runs his family cattle ranch in Lincoln County, New Mexico. Additionally, he has been married three times: Patricia Oates (first marriage), Billie Kay Butler and Janice C Smith. Since 2014, Sam Donaldson and Sandra Martorelli Donaldson have been living together with their four children – Samuel III, Jennifer, Thomas and Robert – in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Sam was previously diagnosed with skin cancer and underwent treatment to have it removed from his leg.

Amy Rextrew, a sophomore enrolled in Basic Human Development, received the Amy Rextrew Award, which is named for a former dean of the College of Home Economics and recognizes students who demonstrate outstanding qualities of scholarship, leadership and character.

Personal Life

Sam Donaldson has been married to Sandra Martorelli Donaldson since 2014. They reside in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Prior to this union he had three marriages; Patricia Oates from 1954 – 1962, Billie Kay Butler 1963-1980 and Janice C Smith 1983-14; each resulted in four children (Samuel III, Thomas, Jeniffer and Robert Donaldson). Since 1995 when his lymph node melanoma was removed he has become an advocate for cancer research research efforts.

He owns and operates a family cattle ranch in Lincoln County. As a longtime supporter of the Democratic Party, he enjoys hunting and fishing as hobbies – winning several prestigious awards such as Edward R. Murrow Award and Paul White Award in recent years.
