Early Life and Education
Steve Crossman has been an invaluable mentor since graduating from VCU SOM in 1995 (M’95). He takes great care in listening and guiding mentees, and is widely recognized for his ability to connect with students. Furthermore, Steve leads medical student brigades to Honduras where they provide critical healthcare while experiencing firsthand life-altering experiences.
Some scholars believe Crossman’s first visit to fiercely political 1930s Germany ignited his interest in politics, prompting him to join Britain’s Labour Party; though never fully conforming with its mold, he often found himself at odds with its leadership.
His political interests were broad, while his intellectual independence can be seen in his diary writings which were published despite attempts at suppression and remain some of his best work. Additionally, he produced a book on Plato’s Republic as well as hosting lectures for BBC.
Professional Career
Over two decades, he was CEO of Hilltop Securities, an investment banking firm focused on building national investment banking operations. Additionally, he served on the Nevada Board of Education as well as being appointed by former governors to serve on their boards of education.
Crossman at Mendocino College is passionate about helping his students find a path that suits them, including researching schools and careers to ensure the right choice is made. Mentorship isn’t something he does – rather it’s who he is!

Crossman is not only active in his field of medicine but is also highly involved in several civic and social organizations in Edwardsville. He currently belongs to Edwardsville Jaycees and former Board of Director Member for St Clair County Chamber of Commerce as well as Hot Rod Club of Edwardsville and Gateway Getaways chapter of FMCA.

Always readily available to his students and always listening attentively, he helps guide them towards making well-informed career decisions that incorporate their personal values, interests, and skills within the context of their academic record – doing this with care has helped foster strong bonds between him and them.
