Steven Corey is both an author and professor, having served the Georgia Review since 1983 in various capacities including assistant editor. Since then he has written many essays and poems for publication within its pages.

Corey has appeared at numerous Bluegrass and Classic Country festivals nationwide. Additionally, he has recorded two albums that showcase his unique sound.

Early Life and Education

Corey Byler Rew has written several books, such as Startled at the Big Sound: Essays Personal, Literary and Cultural (Mercer University Press), as well as individual poems, essays and reviews. Additionally, he is a contributor for several magazines and newspapers and currently practices law at Corey Byler & Rew LLLP to assist clients with Estate Planning & Probate matters.

He was an accomplished blues guitarist, earning comparisons to both Stevie Ray Vaughan and Eric Clapton. Corey released several albums during his lifetime – among them, Road to Zen from 1995.

As Olivet College’s 27th President, he has engaged the community in an ambitious process to determine its path into the next decade. Passionate about leadership development, he initiated both President’s Leadership Institute and Employee Leadership Academy programs at Olivet.

Professional Career

Steven Corey currently serves as Dean and Professor of History in Columbia College Chicago’s School of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS), joining in 2012 as both professor and chair of its Department of Humanities, History, and Social Science. Prior to that he taught at Worcester State University in Massachusetts as well as Yeshiva University in New York City.

His research interests encompass waste management, urban history, public history and social history. He served as research curator for the groundbreaking exhibition Garbage! The History and Politics of Trash in New York City at Gottesman Exhibition Hall at New York Public Library (1994-95), wrote numerous articles and even a book related to this topic; additionally he served on the board for Southside Community Land Trust of Providence Rhode Island from 2007-2011.
