Early Life and Education

Theodore was born into a prominent family in Antioch (Antakya in southern Turkey). He attended the renowned rhetorical school of Antiochene rhetor Libanius.

His rhetorical training had equipped him for a career as a local notable serving his city and rubbing elbows with imperial power brokers. Furthermore, it taught him how to craft Christian paideia and pass it along to younger Christians as they entered the Christian community.
