Early Life and Education

Emory Thomas has been with Thomas Turfgrass since its establishment by his father in 1969, serving as operations manager and overseeing seven installation crews. Additionally, Thomas Turfgrass manufactures, installs and maintains sod products.

Thomas and Traci have two children together; Seth joined their business after college. Together they run a wholesale store near San Antonio in Texas as well as providing marketing services and H-2A visa applications.

GAM recently conducted a model run and discovered that the Thomas Turf Grass Well would cause significant drawdown in several nearby aqua wells and recharge well locations producing from the Simsboro Aquifer. These findings align with other modeling conducted in this region.

Professional Career

Emory Thomas, owner of Thomas Turfgrass, credits the family-run business’s seven installation crews with keeping operations running efficiently and satisfying customers at every turn during their sod purchase and installation experience.

Emory’s most recent projects include providing and installing Celebration(r) Bermudagrass at LSU Tiger Stadium and Latitude 36(r) at Houston Dynamo’s professional soccer arena BBVA Compass Stadium in BBVA Compass Stadium (BBVA Compass Stadium is not a sports stadium). He also plans on installing new grass at Cotton Bowl.

Thomas Turf Services and Thomas Analytical Services’ teams offer soil testing, turf management and greens mix design services that assist architects, golf course managers and superintendents worldwide in creating quality turf facilities. In their laboratory they offer both physical and chemical soil tests.

Achievement and Honors

Established in 2005, this award recognizes those who make significant and selfless contributions to Midwest Regional Turf Foundation or the turf industry. Previous recipients have included those responsible for founding University of Wisconsin Turfgrass Program, chairing Purdue University Turf Program and serving on its board as members.

Thomas established Thomas Turf Services in 1992. This lab is recognized globally and was the second to receive certification by USGA to assess geotechnical evaluation of putting green materials. A sister company called Thomas Analytical Services offers soil testing and analysis, such as sand characterization, nutrient evaluation and irrigation water analyses.

One high-profile project undertaken by this sod farm included installing its Latitude 36 grass at Dallas’ Cotton Bowl football stadium and Houston’s BBVA Compass Stadium professional soccer arena, in addition to providing Celebration Bermudagrass at LSU’s Tiger Stadium.

Personal Life

Novelly and Thomas enjoyed sailing their billionaire’s yacht to picturesque Exuma Island beaches during their trips to the Bahamas, which boast porcelain beaches, cerulean waters, and fresh mahi-mahi fish. Photos and former yacht workers recall these excursions fondly.

Huizenga made his fortune storing and transporting oil. Friends and former employees recall that in addition to lavish gifts for himself, he lavishly showered gifts on those around him – from paying for meals at restaurants he frequented, giving away boxes of sports tickets at every opportunity, even inviting Thomas onto his private jet on occasion!

Thomas wrote to the court, informing them that he and his wife have used the suite at taxpayer expense multiple times for college football games, although he claimed he receives no other perks from the school (an outright lie).
