During his time at Michigan, the New England quarterback was a two-time All-Big Ten selection and an All-B1G honorable mention. He also led the team to the national championship in 1995.

There was a time, though, when that wasn’t the case. Back in Ann Arbor, when he was a redshirt freshman and a 199th-round draft pick, it took a lot for him to make his first career start. He was a few weeks behind Lloyd Carr, a senior who’d already won a BCS title and whose reputation as a great leader and a good passer was well established.

It wasn’t until the end of his sophomore season that Brady got his chance to show everyone what he could do. It was in the final minutes of a blowout win over UCLA that he finally got on the field to make a pass. It wasn’t a beautiful pass, but it was impressive in a different way.

The other big thing that happened that day, though, was the moment he started wearing shoulder pads. That would eventually lead to the most storied NFL career in history, with 23 seasons, 383 games and seven Super Bowl wins.

But before that, there was a long road that got him there. A road paved with doubts, roadblocks and slights that he often fought to overcome. It was a journey that lasted more than two decades.

He fought those battles with an internal drive that was bigger than his physical talent. It was the spark that turned an underdog into a champion.

During his 23 years in the NFL, the GOAT won seven Super Bowl titles and holds the record for the most passes ever completed. He also leads the league in passing yards, touchdowns and completion percentage.

As he nears retirement, though, it’s worth taking a look at his most interesting accomplishments. And it’s something you probably won’t see on the field: His 25-year-old shoulder pads.

That’s a pretty big deal, and it may have even more meaning than you think. That’s because it was the very first time that Tom Brady got his hands on shoulder pads, and he is still sporting them in his current uniform. It’s a very unique story and one that you won’t hear anywhere else in football.
